Fabien Fryns Fine Art is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition in Los Angeles of Chinese photographer Chen Man’s work, titled Red Beauty. Born in 1980 in Beijing, Chen graduated from the photography department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. She has produced photographs for prestigious fashion magazines, such as Vogue, Elle and Bazaar, among others.

The solo exhibition is a selected survey of Cao Yingbin' s artistic practice from the past few years. As a member of the 70s generation, Cao’s work is largely inspired by nostalgic memories of the 80s and 90s, as well as traditional Chinese culture. In some of his work, the characters, objects, scenes—such as the Monkey King, candy wrappers and nightly rides on an old bus—can be seen as seemly insignificant parts of China’s daily life back then; however, now when they make their reappearances in Cao’s work, the things are no longer as simple as they were, but rather what they represent—reflections of the transitional times and a society that underwent dramatic cultural and economic transformations. In Cao’s work, the subjects are not only memories but also witnesses of this change, nevertheless from the most ordinary and day-by-day point of view.

Marilyn Monroe remains immortal until today, not only through her Hollywood legacy but also through the touching portraits of star photographer Lawrence Schiller.
Generation Hangzhou 2.0

The group exhibition features ten young artists who all graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou from as early as 1995 to as recent as 2008. In these fourteen years, and especially in the last decade, the China Academy of Art has built a strong reputation on its innovative New Media program. “Generation Hangzhou 2.0” is a highly selective survey exhibition of the young alumni who have been actively working in the Chinese contemporary art field.

Beautiful Bugs at The Opposite House

The pieces on display at the Opposite House are from Feng Shu's POST PERIOD INSECT series and include a larger than “insect” life praying mantis, mosquito, beetle, scorpion, dragonfly, bee and spider. Also part of the exhibition is a motorbike, made of 20,000 small plastic squares. This piece stands in obvious stark contrast to the almost romantic and fairy tale like insects, yet it perfectly blends into the scene with its delicate structure.

Inspired by the title of the movie "In The Mood For Love", "In The Mood For Paper" is a follow-up of the acclaimed "Crouching Paper, Hidden Dragon" works on paper show, a group show of solely Chinese contemporary artists held at F2 Gallery in 2008. The "lighter" title reflects the very different economical situation in which it's taking place; a severe global crisis that has put a damper on everyone's mood for quite sometime now.
